Spanish Radio Grows in West Michigan

La Poderosa Becomes the First All Spanish Radio Station in Michigan to Broadcast in FM

March 17, 2015 (GRAND RAPIDS, MI) – In Spanish, La Poderosa ( means “the powerful one”, an appropriate name for the Grand Rapids based radio station that is now making a deeper impact on the local media landscape by becoming the first all Spanish radio station broadcasting on the FM dial in Michigan. Previously broadcasting on 640 AM since 2004, La Poderosa made the switch to 93.3 FM (WMJH) on March 2.

“It’s been a very exciting move,” says Efrain Cano, owner of Cano’s Broadcasting which operates La Poderosa at 2422 Burton ST SE in Grand Rapids. The Latino community has been growing in Michigan and is now almost 10% of the population in Kent County.

“Seeing our Latino community growing, we knew that adding an FM frequency was the right thing to do,” says Cano.

When Cano launched La Poderosa in 2004, he started with two CD players, microphones, and a few hundred CDs. Growing his business wasn’t easy, but now Cano runs the only Spanish language radio station in West Michigan.

“My vision for La Poderosa as an FM station, was to increase our reach with a stronger frequency. I was inspired by our growing Latino consumer base and businesses in West Michigan.” Relates Cano “As a result, we’re now in a better position to connect companies and organizations to our growing population of Spanish-speaking listeners.”
